Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (17)

Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (17)Almost all listed suspicious lesions (nodules and masses) on chest roentgenographs as one of the five most common indications. Hemoptysis, pneumonia/ infection, difiuse pulmonary process, and therapeutic reasons were also mentioned among the five most common indications by more than 50 percent. Nearly one fourth mentioned cough as one of the five indications. Another interesting finding was the relatively significant number (15 percent) of physicians who listed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and immunocompromise in a patient with lung disease among the five most common indications. Complications Major and minor complications (Table 8) were defined in the questionnaire. The minor complication rate was reported to be 10 percent or less by more than 80 percent of respondents. The rate of major complications was even lower, with only 3.5 percent of physicians recording a major complication rate of more than 5 percent. Comments: These numbers reflect the well-established safety of bronchoscopy procedures. We were unable to obtain the number of deaths, even though seven physicians wrote that they had no deaths. Many wrote they considered that bleeding of less than 50 ml was part of the procedure rather than a complication. Table 8—Complication Bates
