Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (12)

A report from the United Kingdom observed that 6 percent of the brochoscopists performed bronchoscopy without routinely using any sedatives, 17 percent used intravenous sedation during the procedure, and 19 percent used both intravenous sedation and premedication. The wide choice of intravenous sedative drugs and drug combinations routinely used by the bronchoscopists in our survey is noteworthy. Anesthesia When asked about the frequency of utilization of an anesthesiologist or anesthetist during bronchoscopy, the 871 respondents gave the following answers: routinely, 7.6 percent (66); sometimes, 4.5 percent (39); rarely 80.6 percent (702). No response was provided by 7.3 percent (64). When asked if general anesthesia was used for bronchoscopy, 16.5 percent (144) answered yes. Pulse or other oximetry was used routinely by 84.2 percent (733), sometimes by 6.4 percent (56), and rarely by 6.0 percent (52); 3.4 percent (30) gave no response. Electrocardiographic monitoring was used routinely by 74.6 percent (650), sometimes by 8.2 percent (71), rarely by 14.0 percent (122); 3.2 percent (28) provided no response. Supplemental oxygen was delivered routinely by 88.9 percent (774), sometimes by 6.4 percent (56), and rarely by 1.6 percent (14); 3.1 percent (27) furnished no response.
