Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (13)

Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (13)The recovery area used following bronchoscopy was listed as an area adjacent to the bronchoscopy suite by 56.5 percent (492) and as a separate area, such as an outpatient waiting area, the procedure room itself, or the emergency room, by 42.6 percent (371), 9.1 percent (79) reported using both of these settings. Comments: The British study reported that general anesthesia was used by 12 percent of the bronchoscopists surveyed. Our survey did not look into the use of topical anesthetics, although we surmise that most bronchoscopists use lidocaine. While an overwhelming majority of our survey respondents reported using supplemental oxygen during bronchoscopy, as recommended in several publications,’' only 18 percent of the British bronchoscopists surveyed routinely provided supplemental oxygen. Bronchoscopy Procedures A large number of questions were devoted to technical aspects of bronchoscopy and related procedures. The survey responses to several of these questions are summarized in Tables 5 and 6. Comments: Nearly 43 percent used both the nasal and the oral route, while one third used the nasal route exclusively (Table 5). Only 6.4 percent used the oral route only. Interestingly, several physicians who had routinely employed the nasal route wrote that, after using the oral route, they changed to the oral route. Table 5—Use of Oral or Nasal Bronchoscopy Route
