Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (4)
Nearly half (430) were in group practice, 24.9 percent (217) were in solo private practice, 20.8 percent were in academic institutions, and 3.0 percent (26) were in other types of practices (health maintenance organization, 12; armed forces, 8; Veterans Administration, 6; the type of practice was not specified by 17.
The respondents' geographic locations in the United States were as follows: Northeast, 27.7 percent (241); Southeast, 17.0 percent (148); North Central, 16.6 percent (145); West, 11.4 percent (99); Southwest, 9.6 percent (84); South Central, 7.2 percent (63); Northwest, 4.1 percent (36); Puerto Rico, 0.2 percent (2). Canadian bronchoscopists accounted for 5.7 percent (50) of the respondents.
Almost 40 percent (346) of the bronchoscopists practiced in cities with populations of more than 500,000 persons; 30.5 percent (266), in cities with populations of 100,000 to 500,000; 15.3 percent (133), in cities with populations of 50,000 to 100,000; 8.7 percent (76), in cities with populations of 25.000 to 50,000; and 5.5 percent (48) in cities of less than 25,000. Two respondents did not provide a location. American Board of Internal Medicine certification status was as follows: certified in pulmonary diseases, 86.1 percent (750); board eligible in pulmonary diseases, 6.8 percent (59); certified in critical care medicine, 44.3 percent (386); certified in internal medicine only, 6.9 percent (60); Fellow of Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) in pulmonary diseases, 4.2 percent (37); FRCPC in internal medicine, 6.3 percent (55). Other board certifications were reported by 23.
