Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (9)

Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (9)Fluoroscopy Availability of a fluoroscopy facility dedicated to bronchoscopy was reported by 20.9 percent (182) of the 871 respondents; the facility was shared with nonbronchoscopists by 74.1 percent (645). No response on this topic was given by 5.1 percent (44). Comments: Biplane fluoroscopy equipment is essential for accurate localization to obtain TBLB specimens. By demonstrating the location of the biopsy forceps relative to a lesion or pleura, fluoroscopy helps in minimizing the risk of pneumothorax, particularly following TBLB. The majority of our survey participants shared the fluoroscopy equipment with nonbronchoscopists. In many institutions, the fluoroscopy machines are operated and administered by radiology departments, and bronchoscopists have to use the equipment with the approval of radiologists. Several physicians commented that their radiology departments did not allow them to use fluoroscopy machines. Prebronchoscopy Tests The questionnaire listed several diagnostic studies and asked whether each was performed by the respondents before bronchoscopy. Table 2 shows the number of survey participants who indicated that they deemed the various tests necessary before they performed bronchoscopy. Table 2—Ifeste Required before Bronchoscopy
