Unique Therapeutic Wilderness Program Launches for Autism Awareness Month : Blending traditional therapeutic methods with a challenging outdoor environment, SUWS of the Carolinas, a therapeutic wilderness program located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina
announces its new Approach program aimed at helping kids with autism, a disorder that currently affects one in every 90 children in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. The unique program will focus on building social skills for those that have high-functioning autism such as Asperger’s, and other spectrum disorders such as Non-verbal Learning Disorder (NLD) and Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD).
Concentrating on teens ages 14 to 17, the Approach program provides a safe, predictable and consistent environment to increase the ability to learn and grow. Freed from modern distractions and negative peer influences in the wilderness, participants learn to develop healthy relationships, teamwork, self-confidence and a sense of personal responsibility.
“Social relationships are a primary part of adolescence, so when issues arise that compound social development, the results can be detrimental, impacting mood, self-esteem, relationships, family and school performance. As a result there can be delay in other developmental tasks,” said Brandon Moffitt, therapist and program manager for the Approach program. “Because the Approach program is completely outdoors, we remove kids from the confines of their typical home environments to address self-defeating behaviors and allow for self-reflection while setting them up for increased social success with those that have similar issues.”
With an exceptional student-to-staff ratio, individualized treatment plans and a positive peer culture the Approach wilderness therapy program assists students and families in progressing toward individualized goals. The safe environment allows participants to redefine their hopes for the future while discovering the ability to grow into the people they want to be.
