Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (5)

Bronchoscopy in North America: The ACCP Survey (5)Fifty-eight percent (505) of the respondents mentioned that they had been in bronchoscopy practice for more than ten years. Almost one fourth (214) had been performing bronchoscopy for seven to ten years; 23.5 percent (205), for four to seven years; 9.2 percent (80), for two to four years; and 0.7 percent (6), for less than two years. Seven respondents provided no information on this subject. Bronchoscopy in General A total of 466 survey participants provided data on the number of bronchoscopic procedures they performed during 1989 (Table 1). The mean number of procedures per physician was 115 (range, 1 to 450). These 466 physicians performed a total of 53,639 bronchoscopic procedures during 1989. This survey also demonstrates that an overwhelming majority of bronchoscopists (91.6 percent [798/871]) do not utilize the rigid bronchoscope; only 8.4 percent (73) respondents indicated that they use the rigid bronchoscope in their practice. Of the 871 respondents, only 0.6 percent (5) remarked that they do not do fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Only 13.2 percent (115) of the 871 respondents practiced pediatric bronchoscopy, while 79.2 percent (690) did not; 7.6 percent (66) did not answer this question.
